When Hannah shared that "the Earth turns and the sun comes out" the children explored further about day and night . They were exposed on the idea of how the Earth spins. This gave them an idea on why we have day and night. Along this line, they found out that not only the sun gives light but other things that use electricity as well. They explored things that use electricity to produce light. Oskar said "battery has electricity", the children had the opportunity to play with different things that use battery and give light or has light. We use light not only to see in the dark but also to keep us safe. (Mini) Traffic lights are one of the things they shared in the classroom and had the chance to learn further how to be safe when walking or crossing the street. We have learned that children in Korea, because of their size, are taught to raise their hands when crossing the streets to make the drivers aware that they are crossing. But the children know that they need to be with a grown up when crossing the streets.

As we open a new unit the children were engaged in showing the different kinds of light they have in their homes. They showcased how each one works and how they are able to use them. Ms. Pam even demonstrated how a flashlight works in a dark room when you want to see something. Their inquiring minds had a green light to start finding out more about LIGHT. The book "Daytime Nighttime" by William Low gave the children something to talk about. They shared the things that make day and night different from each other. They put their ideas into a collaborative painting of day and night. We counted fireflies as we end the week. We practiced "taking away" one firefly at a time and put them in a jar. Towards the end we let the fireflies go to let them light up the sky even more.
I hope everyone had a wonderful Holiday. Welcoming all our families as we start another term!
