The children continue to explore light by going outside and looking at their own shadows. They were all creative with their poses! Light can bring out different colors if it goes through glass. The children found out how to make different colors by mixing primary colors together to get new colors! Their creative juices started flowing as they created their own light, like robot light, unicorn light, cracker light, different kinds of flashlights, etc. We had a treat on Friday when Vanesa came for Show and Tell and shared to us their pet hamster named Bianca. They showed us what she eats and told us that hamsters don't need light as they are awake at night doing things they love doing, like running!

The children again had a treat spending some moments in the day with their parents. In our second ELC Open House this year, each child was able to showcase different skills and showing how well they perform in different activities. The parents' participation inspired the children to display more of what they are learning. It was a wonderful day to celebrate Learning!
Thank you parents for making time! When Hannah shared that "the Earth turns and the sun comes out" the children explored further about day and night . They were exposed on the idea of how the Earth spins. This gave them an idea on why we have day and night. Along this line, they found out that not only the sun gives light but other things that use electricity as well. They explored things that use electricity to produce light. Oskar said "battery has electricity", the children had the opportunity to play with different things that use battery and give light or has light. We use light not only to see in the dark but also to keep us safe. (Mini) Traffic lights are one of the things they shared in the classroom and had the chance to learn further how to be safe when walking or crossing the street. We have learned that children in Korea, because of their size, are taught to raise their hands when crossing the streets to make the drivers aware that they are crossing. But the children know that they need to be with a grown up when crossing the streets. As we open a new unit the children were engaged in showing the different kinds of light they have in their homes. They showcased how each one works and how they are able to use them. Ms. Pam even demonstrated how a flashlight works in a dark room when you want to see something. Their inquiring minds had a green light to start finding out more about LIGHT. The book "Daytime Nighttime" by William Low gave the children something to talk about. They shared the things that make day and night different from each other. They put their ideas into a collaborative painting of day and night. We counted fireflies as we end the week. We practiced "taking away" one firefly at a time and put them in a jar. Towards the end we let the fireflies go to let them light up the sky even more.
I hope everyone had a wonderful Holiday. Welcoming all our families as we start another term!
A fun fun day as we celebrate winter with a concert about Earth. The children dedicated their performances on how we can contribute in taking care of our environment. It is the best day for Santa to come too and give them gifts for a great performance! Watch the video of our Winter Concert :) Our festive week ended with a wonderful parade for "Sta. Lucia". St. Lucy's day is a celebration of Scandinavian countries every 13th of December that coincides with the winter solstice. After an enchanting parade, everyone had a share of delicious buns. We have completed our Preschool storybook entitled "The Giraffe In The House". The children had a few ideas for the title of their book. We had to vote and choose the one they liked most. We counted the votes and they chose "The Giraffe In The House" that had the biggest number. Each one created a cover for their own copies of the book. We have our book displayed on our bulletin board and the original on the ELC PYP Wall, on the hallway going to the cafeteria. Check it out! We had a discussion about Santa in class and the children shared what they like for Christmas. This gave an opportunity for everyone to write to Santa and tell him what gift they want to receive. The children were able to write "Dear Santa" on their letter with a drawing of the gift. We are getting ready for our Winter Concert. The children have been practicing well and each one is doing their parts really well! Every week the children go to the library for some book shopping. They have their own book bags and we keep them in the classroom. They "read" the books whenever they have time. They have learned to choose a variety of three books every time. The children are beginning to create their own story! Collaboratively we identified the characters and the settings of our story. We started to put together the ideas of the children to make the storyline. It was an exciting journey with them as their creative juices started to flow. They needed to make pictures of each scene they developed and in small groups worked together to design each page of their story. Here is a glimpse of an almost complete story. These are the pages of their upcoming story book. Next week we will work on our Title and Cover design. Watch out for it! |
