Making a story book! As the children have been interested in shopping, we wanted to invite them to go a supermarket nearby our school. My intention was for the children to get exposure to a grocery store where they could then contribute ideas to turning our classroom into a make-believe grocery store, but we also decided to write a story about the trip with our families after connecting it to our central idea: "Ways we tell stories". Throughout making the book, the children reflected on what they did and bought on the day. The children made the book together, as some of the children drew the pictures, while some of them colored the pictures. Some of them sounded out the words and wrote down the sentences by themselves, while some of the children made a cover for the book. They did a wonderful job!!! Here is the book about “We Went Shopping”. The children discussed who wanted to be a cashier and a customer and helped each other to set up our dress up corner to look like a supermarket, such as setting up some drinks to sell, making some meat balls with Play dough and adding price tags on the items. To challenge the children, we then introduced different ways to make bananas, fish, apples and strawberries, such as making bananas with folding paper. We are doctors! The children continued to explore what doctors do this week. To support their learning, we then invited them to visit our school nurse, who introduced what the nurses/doctors do and what the nurse’s room looks like to the children again. They brought some ideas back after visiting the nurse’s room, such as making a computer with a box, making an open and closed sign and setting up a bed for patients. They displayed cooperation and communication skills, while they negotiated and discussed with friends about who wanted to be a doctor and the patient. We love our new friends, Chubsey and Bella. Exploring Ways we tell/listen stories. The children enjoys exploring audio stories in the class. We introduced how to use CD player last week, now the children demonstrated independently as they picked the audio book and placed the CD in the CD player and pressed the buttons by themselves. We express our ideas in different ways. We had so much fun in Miss Olds's class. Ms.Son set up four different activities for the children to explore. The children enjoyed her class very much. Ms.Graff read this story with the children and they all loved it very much.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8f4y51qC6M Jr. preschool jungle Jr. preschool children made a class jungle together. Children have learned that all animals share many similarities but there are big differences between tame and wild animals. We have discussed where and how wild animals live and talked about the importance of keeping them safe. We talked about big cats, where they live, and how they were different from domestic cats. Children also learned about bears, where they live, and what they eat. We discussed snakes and crocodiles and the habitats in which they live. Children also learned about snakes and crocodiles and how they were different from other wild animals. We discussed elephants, hippos, and giraffes, the countries in which they live, and what they eat. While we had a circle, children thought that all the animal could live together in the Jungle so we decided to make our class jungle. Here is our journey to make our class jungle! Animal Beginning sounds game Jr. preschool class has worked in animal literacy center. Children enjoyed several interactive hands on activities that concentrate on letters sounds and were animal theme related. To start off, we sang an alphabet song that said the name of the letter and the sound. Children looked for a beginning sound by looking at the picture cards. They told the initial sound the animal’s name made and letter that made that sound. Then we started again! :0 We passed out the letters and encouraged students to line the letters up in a row so they could see them clearly. Then, children had a chance to say each letter name (great way to quickly get them to practice letter identification!) If a child a picture of a DOG, we would say, “this is a picture of an OG.” Children laughed and said “dog.” We said that the words read “OG” and asked what I should do to fix the word so it said a dog. Children were encouraged saying out the word slowly D-O-G and told us the first sound that they heard. When they said out the letter, we asked them which letter is D. We played this game for a few rounds and they played the game with their friends. Korean Class : Pajama Day Story
We had a busy, and full of excitement week, as the children participated positively in Spirit Week. I hope you all had a great week with your child while you helped him/her to prepare the costumes for each day. Our big hit of this week was “going to the supermarket” on Wednesday. The children were so excited to go and paid attention to what the supermarket looked like and what food/items in the supermarket. I read some books about a supermarket to the children, which gave the children some ideas about what we were looking for when we visited the supermarket. We also made a shopping list during circle time and items on the list were apples, bananas, fish, carrots, paprika, lettuce, strawberries, orange, dumpling, seaweed, and spaghetti. We are the best chef! The children wanted to cook the food, so therefore, we discussed what we can make with the food they bought, the next day. The menu was fruit salad, salad (carrots, lettuce, and paprika), fried fish, orange juice, dumpling, pancakes, and spaghetti. The children had some choices to make the food that they wanted to cook. They were proud of themselves that they could cook the food and had so much fun. Of course, they ate it all, because they made it all by themselves, with very little help. At the end of the day, we asked the children what they made and they thought about it today such as "I make pancake, but I feel tired", "I love today, I like to cut strawberries", "I made orange juice, and I feel so so so so happy" . What a wonderful week we had!! Throughout the inquiry of “shopping and cooking”, the children gained experience, using mathematics and science skills, self-esteem, communication, comprehension (follow the cooking steps), and most importantly, had fun. Next week, we will invite the children to make a story about our shopping and cooking, which is connect Ed to our Unit of Inquiry: “How We Express Ourselves”. "In Reggio process of learning involves making connections and relationships between feeling, ideas, words and action." By Debbie LeeKeenan and John Nimmo. “Education is a nature process carried out by the child and is not acquired by listening to words but by experience and environment." By Maria Montessori We have a new friend, "Chubsey". what is Your favorite Animal? After we learned about animals, we wanted to know what our favorite animal was. We picked our favorite farm animal and made a class graph of our favorite animal. Children chose their favorite animals and drew on the post-it and placed on their favorite one. We recorded data to go with our class graph. We discussed about our favorite animal and why it was our favorite. Quinn “I like lion because it has sharp teeth” Mason “I like Elephant because it is big and has a beautiful trunk Clovis: “This Goat!” Vilmer: “Ah-ah-o-o (Monkey sounds)” Simone: “Big!” Seojin: “Hippo is cute and big” Kaylee: “It is tall and his neck is long” Johannes: “E-ah!!” (Making scary sounds, He chosen a lion) Hilma: I like lion because, it is strong and big and it has sharp teeth” Milking the Cow We have talked about “what we get from animal?” Children were really interested in thinking about what animals give us and how we appreciated of the animals. Children learned that sheep gave us wool, pigs gave us meat, and chicken gave us meat and eggs. One of the most interesting discussion was children wonder where the milk comes from the cow? Children wonder how the cow makes the milk. So we tried milking cow together. This was a great way to teach the children about cows and where milk comes from. Children learn best by doing and they could experience what it is like to milk a cow, much like a farmer would. When we were all set up. We pricked a hole in the tips of two of the gloves fingertips. Then we filled it up with the watered down white paint. We filled the bucket with water and white paint, and the children gently squeezed the rubber “utters”. They got so excited to see the milk come out! Milking a cow. Children splashed in the "milk" for a while and had to be reminded that it was paint and we really couldn't drink it. Having Fun with unifix Cubes We continued to work on counting activity. Children liked to play with unfix cubes. They snapped the cubes together and stacked up together for hands-on math lesson. Children were excited to practice counting cubes after putting cubes in their proper spot. Counting unfix cubes is a good way for children to practice one-to-one correspondence. (One-to-one correspondence means matching one object to one number or object such as saying one as you touch the first block, two as you touch the second block.) Children enjoyed practicing this skill while they were counting cubes one by one. Giraffe Hand Printing! After children read a story of "Giraffes Can't Dance", they made a giraffe hand painting. Children painted their hands and created own giraffe by using differnt kinds of materials. They freely used play corns and dot stamp markers to make a giraffe! balloon dragon with Mr. Quimpo
Different ways to tell stories! Over the past few weeks, the children have been exploring how to tell a story by using storyboard. At first, I told them a story called: “Three little piglets” with a storyboard when we had circle time. The children enjoyed it very much. Later on, the children engaged positively in telling and creating a story on the board during exploring time. Moreover, I also prepared two different storytelling boards which are princess and sea animals stories for the children to explore. Through this exploration, the children developed language skill, creative skill, and display confidence to express their ideas, thoughts and feeling in a group. Shopping Time!! The children also interested in “shopping”, as the children discussed with their friends on who will be a cashier and what they needed to buy, who wanted to be a mom and dad. To continue to support their learning, we then invited the children to go on a field trip to a supermarket next Tuesday (Feb,14, Tuesday). Our intention is for the children to get exposure to a grocery store that they could then contribute ideas to turning our classroom into a make-believe grocery store, but we also decided to write a story about the trip with our families after which connecting to our central idea: "Ways we tell stories. We will share with you about our field trip and the story next week. What does a doctor do? We noticed that some of children pretended to be a doctor, therefore, we prepared some “doctor-like” toys for the children to play. We also invited the children to our school nurse room to see what nurse does , what tools the nurse use, and how to check a patient. To support their interests, we also prepares some books for them to read; The Animal Hospital by George Wong , Zak and the vet by Julia Donaldson, Nurse help us by Aaron R. Murray and My visit to the doctor by Prisceilla Lamont, and also introduced non-fiction and fiction concept to the children while reading the books. A fun with Ms Olds! A different way to tell/listen a story! Ms. Graff introduced a different way to listen/tell a story - a audio book. Ms Graff shared a story called "three little piglets" with audio book and the children were excited about the story and the audio book. Therefore, the children borrowed some audio books this week from the library.
We have the teepee at playground.
As the children were interested in tent last year, we then asked the school to make a teepee for the children to use at the playground. The children discussed about how many people can go in and what they can do in the teepee. They shared: "6 people can go in and we can eat and read there." |
