This week, we discussed with the children how to take care of our hamsters. The children displayed confidence and understanding that they should touch them softly, not making too much noise, and don’t bang their home. “ We need to touch them gently; they felt hurt if we touch it too hard” and “If we scream and their ears will ouch.” Moreover, we also discussed what the hamsters like to eat, and we found out that the hamsters like to eat fresh veggies and nuts. Bella’s favorite food is sunflowers and Chewy likes to eat carrots. The children even drew pictures of the hamsters. The children can’t wait to feed them, touch them and play with them every morning. We will continue to find out more information about Bella and Chewy.
As the weather is getting warmer, we then invited the children to make fruits popsicles. Thank you to all the parents to send different kinds of fruits, in order to support the children’s learning. The children participated positively as a team as they cut, washed, and mixed the fruits to make popsicles. Everyday, we made different flavored popsicles, such as blueberry, mango with oranges, oranges with apples and oranges, pears and apples. Jr. Preschool class has learned about recycle. For this week, we have done many kinds of activities related to recycle. First of all, our children fascinated with how the paper shredder paper machine worked and, under very close adult supervision, children allowed to feed some papers into the shredder. Every recycle paper they find, children asks if they can shred… We borrowed the paper shredded machine from the resource room and try to use it under safe adult supervision. After we used it, we see if children can gather the shredded paper for a fun sensory bin experience. Children continued to run their hands through the papers and discovered the texture of papers. Children also liked looking for recognizable pieces of pictures and discovering random letters and numbers. A while later, per children’s request, I got children sensory bin filled with house sets with people and they began to work pushing, scooping, and dumping. I had children close their eyes and count to ten and I hid a toy somewhere in the pool. Children had to dig around to try to find it! Also, we brought empty toilet paper rolls outside in playground and built up the castle together. Children were so excited to build it with empty toilet paper rolls and excited to work together! I would like to share their joys with you! As the weather is getting warmer, we set up water station with different materials, such as different sizes of pots, funnels, spoons, containers, and more. There are many benefits that the children can have while they play with water; release energy, gross and fine motor skills, social skills, math skills and more. The most important thing is that the children had fun and they love to explore water play. Our Two Little Friends: Bella and Chewy (Hamsters) The children were so excited to meet our little friends, Bells and Chewy, and were so eager to play with them. Some of children said: “I love Bella, because she is so cute.” Meanwhile other friends shared: “I like Chewy, because I can see him.” This week, we discussed what Hamsters like to eat, so we can prepare some food for them. Making Costumes for our Performance As part of the learning process, we invited the children to make their own costumes for their play on the 3rd of June. Before they started to make the costumes, we discussed with the children what cats/dog/chickens/cows/birds look like, and what sound they can make, etc... The children displayed great understanding and are able to explain, such as "The cats have triangular ears” and “The children have hair on the head.” The children chose their own colored paper, cut the paper and decorated by themselves. We are so proud of them that they are so independent and willing engaged in creative experiences. They had so much fun to make it, even though the costumes do not look perfect, it’s all part of their learning and they are proud of themselves. Well done, Playgroup! The children have been becoming aware of letters in their environment, recognizing letters in our name and friends’ name. We have been practicing, exploring, trial and error, and observing, and now we can write letters, such as “d”. To connect to their learning, we invited the children to go on a letter hunt around ELC classes. The children recognized “d” and wrote it down when they found one in the environment. The children described: “From the top and all the down” while they writing “d” Preparation for our end of year performance The children have been discussing which songs and story they would like to share with their parents for the end of year performance. This week, they have been practicing the song called " Walking in the Jungle". Check out the video; they were so cute and good while following instructions. Moreover, the children decided to tell the parents a story called "Are you my mother?" by P.D Eastman. They chose which character they want to be. Next week, we will discuss with the children how they are going make their costumes for their character. They can't wait to share and perform on the stage on the 3rd of June. What else have the children been exploring this week? The children demonstrated independent and confidence to explore a variety of learning centers. Our goal for the playgroup is encourage them to be independent and able to do/make things by themselves and play with their friends. For example, they are able to build things with Lego and engage positively as a group. The children have been improving a lot in many ways, such as being able to describe things, count, recognize their names and some letters, eat by themselves, write some letters, recognize colors and shapes, jump, skip, and many more. They are growing up so fast and we are so proud of them. Yangsook Choi, author and illustrator of several multicultural children’s books, came to our classroom on Friday, May 13. She brought one of her original painting from her book called 'The Name Jar' and compared the painting and the page from the book. She also explained to us about the process how she makes her illustrations. The children asked many questions related to her picture. "Would you like to see how I draw when I have a spare time?" Ms Choi asked. She began drawing a picture of her breakfast plate and continued on with her picture with a story. When it was finished, it was a monkey! And she signed her picture. Yangsook grew up in Korea but now divides her time between New York and Seoul. Ms. Choi has won numerous awards for her books.

The student-led conference was an opportunity for the children to share some of the exciting things they have done at school with their family members. They showed some of the learning centers in the classroom, current book favorites, and what they were working on in their class. I hope that you and your child were able to celebrate the growth and learning this school year. I enjoyed walking around listening to the conversations and taking pictures of these exciting moments! |
Meet the EARLY YEARS teachersMS.CarolCarol Lesser has over 20 years of experience in early childhood and ESL education. She has taught in Taiwan and Canada and has also worked at international schools in Korea, Indonesia, Singapore and Mongolia. Carol earned a Diploma and a Bachelor of Education in Early Childhood Education from universities in Taiwan. Additionally, she earned a Montessori Graduate Diploma in Vancouver, Canada. Furthermore, she earned a Master of Education in Teaching Second Languages in Toowoomba, Australia. She also has certification in Reggio Emilia, PYP, ESL, and the University of Cambridge International Primary Program. In her free time, Carol enjoys dancing, cooking, organizing social events with her husband, Michael, and traveling. She has been at Busan International Foreign School since 2015. kATHY SONKathy Son has over 20 years of experience in education. She has worked at BIFS since the winter of 1995. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Child Development in California State University of Fullerton and has done a Teacher Credential Program in Concordia University, Irvine.
