On Monday, Dec. 14th, Junior Preschool visited to grocery store where was10 minute away from the school. Throughout the field trip, Children had learned a number of healthy habits and how to make smart food choices at their local Food Stores. This hands-on learning experience exposesed children to a variety of foods in a fun, real-world setting. To promote making a healthy choice, we encouraged children to buy a healthy food by themselves at the store.

Here are some of my favorite activities to do with the ELC. Here are some counting rhymes you can try. They really like the monkeys! Junior preschool loves Engine Number 9. Bill Grogan's Goat The children have been interested in shopping in our dress up corner, as they pretend who wants to be Mommy and Daddy, and act out that they are shopping in the supermarket. To support their learning, we then invited them to go a supermarket nearby our school on the 14th of December. The children walked to the supermarket and bought some fruit to make a fruit salad. The children were excited and engaged to find the fruits that we needed for the fruit salad. When we came back from the supermarket, we then had circle time to discuss where we went, what we brought and what we did and were going to do. The children demonstrated confidence to share their thoughts in a group discussion. We invited the children to smell, touch, and feel the fruits and share what their ideas were about the fruits. We also invited the children to draw pictures to reflect on where we went, and what we brought. After the discussion, we then started to make fruit salad. The children enjoyed the process of making fruit salad. While the children enjoyed eating fruit salad, they noticed seeds from oranges and apples. We then planted the seeds together. Winter/Christmas celebration and class party Thank you for coming to join our winter celebration and class party. We hope you had a wonderful time with your little one. Happy holiday and see you next year,2016. Literacy center: Push Pin Fine Motor Letters
We cut the boxes apart so that each child would have a piece large enough for a piece of paper. Junior preschool children have all the kiddos a large push pin. Teachers write the letters and number to encourage children to poke holes in their letters along the line. This helps to build motor memory for writing the letter, letter recognition, and fine motor skills. We tried a few different tools for making the holes – a large headed push pin from the notice board, a nail, and a bamboo skewer. The wonderful thing about these giant push pins is they promote young learners to use a tripod grasp. There is no way to grab them with their entire fist, like they often do with pencils. The way that they have to hold the pin mimics a correct pencil grasp Sensory Center: Hidden Letters in the goop We mix water and cornstarch together in the big container. In the bin, spoons and plastic letters are placed and invite children to explore goops and letters. Junior preschool seem to love scooping up the goop with their spoons and finding hidden letters from the goop. Goop acts as both a solid and a liquid interchangeably Children move their hands quickly and they can pick it up, but once they hold the goop, it turns to a liquid in their hands and OOZES. We all had so much fun together. Decorating Christmas Tree Junior preschool friends are given a spiral lined paper. They are encouraged to cut along the line and decorating with sequences to make a tree. After we finish making an ornament we try to hang it on the tree to decorate the tree! Look at our Christmas Tree! Literacy centers - ´Roll ‘n’ Write - There are letters on the sides of the dice. To play, children roll the die and write the letter they rolled in the first square. They continue rolling and writing until all of the squares are filled up. When they are done, they can count each letter and determine which have the most/least/same amount. Some children enjoyed making books at the Book making center. Sequencing pictures, coloring pencils, scissors, glue sticks, papers and other materials were available to make books. When they were finished, some of the children had a chance to read their books to the class. Art center – We searched on the internet to find a special recipe for making playdough. We tried two different ones. One is an uncooked recipe and the other one needs to cook. http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Make-Playdough-Play-doh http://www.learning4kids.net/2015/08/30/homemade-rubbery-goop-recipe/ The children will continue to play with playdough and compare if there is any difference. Pretend play center - We turned this center into a sandwich shop a couple weeks ago and they have been playing in it. Just last Thursday, some children came up with a new menu, chicken salad! Oskar brought money from home for us to use! Thank you, Oskar.
The children have been curious and interested in Christmas trees at school. They have been talking about Christmas trees, Santa, snowmen, snow, stars and more. To continue to support their interest, we then prepared a variety of materials, such white circles, green and red paper winter pictures and more. The children made their own snowmen and Christmas trees. Some of the children drew and cut circles by themselves to make a snowman, while of some them used white circles to make circles. Some of them drew an oval and decorated it as a Christmas tree. They displayed confidence to express their ideas with how to make their own artwork. Each snowman and tree looked different than the others and they all looked great and cute!! We are so proud of our little ones. Well done, Playgroup. While the children were exploring how to make trees and snowmen, they were also enjoying pretending to be a mom, or a dad or a sister and pushing a cart to shop together in the class. Moreover, they set up the table for their own birthday party after shopping. To support their interest, we are planning to have a field trip to a supermarket and make fruit salad in the class next Monday. The children also like to discover different corners in our class. For example, the water corner, which provides opportunities for children to experiment with math and science concepts, strengthen their physical skills, advance their social and emotional skills, and enhance language development (Crosser, 1994; Hendrick, 1996). Moreover, the children enjoy to making Play-dough at our Play-dough table and exploring a variety of materials to make items from Play-dough . Literacy Center
Pre-Writing Activities with Squishy Bags is a great way to target writing skills without using paper and pencils. It is providing a fun and exciting way to invite children to practice writing letters, numbers, their name, drawing pictures, shapes and words. Children can practice hand and finger movements for pre-writing development on the squishy bag. We have included with this activity number and letters frames that will provide a resource for children to trace and copy certain strokes and markings onto the squishy bag. Sensory Center We have rainbow rice at a sensory bin. We brought out the cups, funnel and other containers. The rice then got mixed for measuring and pouring. Children are very interested in the mixing of the colors and exploring texture of rice by playing. Math Center In math center, we have different kinds of counting books. Children love the stories Not only they love stories, they love stories that include things that can be played with on the pages. Exploring counting book helps children to learn how to recognize and count numbers Hello, My name is Mr. Jefferson. I will be posting some of our activities as a document for you to do at home. If you have any specific requests, feel free to email me at [email protected]. The Book we have been singing in class is: Title: There was an Old Lady who Swallowed a Bell Author: Lucille Colandro Illustrator: Jared Lee ISBN: 0-545-04361-1 Cost: $5.99 USD "Senior Preschool Paper City" : The children participated in turning one of our display board into our community. Last week, there was a paper folding book on the table in our Art Center. Some children got interested in making something from the book and Ms Kelly made a house for them. Then Caleb suggested making a garden for the house, Mathis wanted to make a car and Oscar thought about making a garage for the car. As I was listening to the conversation, I said, "How about making our community on this board?" They were thrilled with the idea and started to work on it right away! Oscar and Caleb started with roads and other children started join in our project. They were thinking what are needed in the community, what materials to use, cutting, gluing, drawing, coloring and finding letters to write labels. Some of them used different materials such as blocks to build a zoo and pattern blocks make animals and took pictures of them using the class iPad. Our community will complete with the name placed on the top next week! |
