In Junior preschool, we discover different ways of cooperating and sharing with friends. We worked together to create a giant painting. We shared colours, and the space on one big paper, learning each other's names and what special words to use to ask for something. Even though we all had individual and unique ideas about what to paint, we demonstrated that we could be mindful and respectful of one another's concepts and intentions. Through this activity, the children developed an understanding of how we might respect each other in our larger shared space: the classroom. As a class community, we are increasingly recognizing how we can express our own unique selves, while still respecting others and the group.
Over the past week, the children have been continuing to explore shapes in different ways at school. To make their learning meaningful and to have connections, we then invited them to have shape hunting inside and outside of our classroom. Thank you to Har-Ra and Niwa who found some shapes at home and shared them with us. To provoke their thinking and creation skills, we then asked them what we can make with shapes; Ella shared: ”train”; Har-Ra said: "house”. Thank you for coming to celebrate Chuseok and hope you had a great time with your child. Enjoy the Chuseok holiday and see you on Tuesday. Junior Preschool friends trace their foot with a pencil crayon. Then, We line up the all the foot printings and think about how we can measure our foot. Junior Preschool friends find out we all have different foot shapes and different size. We use play corns and stick them on to our foot printings and see how many play corns can fit into our foot. We gather on the carpet and count the play corns. How many play corns fit into our foot! We count play corns together and talk about who has the most and who has the least.
Our 'show and tell' started this week. The children had opportunities to take the center stage to show off their favorite toys and photos of something special. Some children were feeling a little shy at first, but with a little help and encouragement, they all enjoyed the experience of asking and answering questions.
Hae-Ra brought in a book called "Dinosaurs Roar", by Paul and Henrietta Strickland, at the beginning the week and since then, the children have been expressing their ideas about dinosaurs through drawing, singing, dancing/movement and reading. We discussed what dinosaurs like to eat and what sounds dinosaurs make. If you heard your child make a sound like a "Roar", then you know where it came from. Over past the week, the children have also been exploring different shapes such as a circle, a square, a heart, and a diamond. We sang a song called: "Shape Songs," by Simple Super Song. Then we invited the children to find shapes in our class or on the way to the lunch room and playground. They all found some shapes around them, well done, playgroup! To make meaningful learning experiences and to build a connection with their world, please encourage them to find some circular shaped items, or squares and hearts, or even diamond shaped objects. If your child finds these shapes, please send them to school, so we can discuss the shapes with their friends.
Life Size Self Portrait: Recently, we took turns tracing our bodies on big pieces of white paper. These tracings became canvases for us to document what we now knew about our physical features, personal preferences, and connections to family. Our collage approach demonstrated the interconnection between these things and how all these aspects combine together to make us 'Who We Are'. We used the physical pieces to explore more conceptual understandings, like individuality and personal preference. Junior Preschool friends decorate their body with pompoms, sparklings, battens and Feathers. Next we spent time exploring and representing our whole bodies, experimenting with variety of craft materials as "languages" for self-expression.
Junior preschool class wonders how we can make bubbles. We try to blow with pipes cleaners and use bubbles makers to make bubbles. Students learn that they need to blow the bubble nice and gentle otherwise bubbles are popped. We also paint with water on the playground. Students find out we can see pictures when we draw with waters but it disappear after these are dried.
This week, we read a book called "School" by big box entertainment which shows names of different items in the school. There is a picture of balloons, since then the children have been exploring balloons in different ways. |
