ELC classes participated in the Elementary Music Concert. It was the children's first time performing in front of the big crowd but they performed extremely well. They enjoyed popping up from their boxes as they were moving to the song 'Jack in the Box' and remembered to sing with Mr Jefferson as they were singing 'Down by the Bay'. We are proud of you!

The children have been exploring the ovals shape since last week, and some of friends created dinosaurs with ovals. To connect their learning from oval to dinosaurs, we then started with a song called “Move like a Dinosaur” by Ping Fong, which the children learnt last year. Snice then, the children have been interested in dinosaurs. The children have many different languages, as the children used different ways to express their idea of what dinosaurs are, such as singing, drawing, investigating, crafting and painting. Therefore, to support their interests and learning style, we then prepared a variety of centers for the children to explore; washing the dinosaurs, creating dinosaurs with papers, play-dough, digging the dinosaurs which were under ice, dinosaurs books, making dinosaurs sandwich with bananas and music and movement. The children gained a lot of experiences throughout the exploration, such as social, math, fine and gross motor development, language (name of dinosaurs, such as T-rex, triceratops), creativities and most important, it is fun. The children even took the dinosaurs to see our school nurse, as their dinosaurs have been sick, because they ate too much ice cream. The school nurse has been so nice and showed the children how to check the dinosaurs by using a stethoscope. She even showed the children how to put a bandage on the dinosaurs. After visiting, we then prepared a set of doctor tool for the children to discover. The children checked all the dinosaurs, babies and even Doraemon. We will continue to explore about dinosaurs and a field trip will happen, to visit a mini dinosaur’s park after spring break. Thank you for coming to the Music Concert; we hope you enjoyed it and had a wonderful time watching your little one on the stage. Pajama Day- the children wore their pajama and brought their favorite toys to share with their friends. We made the pancakes and watch a short movie about dinosaurs. We had a fun day on the last day of school. Enjoy your spring break and see you after two weeks. Shapes are everywhere. They all around us; in nature, in songs, in movement ..,everywhere. Children enjoy finding different shapes and telling you what they found around them; finding some squares at the playground; finding a big circle on the wall (the clock), someone wearing a t-shirt which has a heart on it and so on. Over the past few months, the children have been exploring and revisiting basic shapes (squares, triangles, circles and hearts) throughout different activities, such as songs, make a circle with fingers, going on a shape hunt…etc. This week, we introduced an oval shape to the children through a song called “The Shape Song #2”(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=03pyY9C2Pm8) during our circle time. To connect the children’s learning to their "real world", we then invited them to go on an oval hunt. We asked the children to take a photo and draw an oval when they found one, in order to develop their science skills, which are recording and documenting skills. To continue to support their learning and interests, and develop their thinking skills, we read a book called: “Not a Box” by….. This story is describing that a box can be many things, such as a car, a rocket, a mountain and more. After the story, we then asked: "What can we make from ovals?”. The children demonstrated confidence to share their ideas; “a train”, ”a rocket”, “a house”, “a monster” and displayed creativity to present their ideas throughout crafting. This week, we put out the transparent Lego on the light table for the children to explore. The children love to build things and explore how high they can make with Lego on the light table. This is a great way for the children to develop fine motor skill, math concepts, social skills, as well as, they had so much fun. This week was the last week of Show and Tell for this term. Their questioning skills have improved through the experience. They can ask relevant questions and listen carefully to others. They also can stay focused for the time needed to finish. Book Making Center: The center had different stamps and stamp pad for making books. Some children enjoyed drawing their own pictures when making books and some children enjoyed using stamps to illustrate their stories. Below are a couple examples of stories that were made by children. "Elephant and Butterfly" - Butterflies and Elephants are friends. All of them are not friends. Then all of them are friends again and they all play together. "Mouse and Seahorse" - The mouse wanted to go to the field trip by himself. And then he got lost but found a friend. He asked, "Did you see my house?" The friend said, "Yes." And he followed his friend. Pretend Play Center: Many children were busy using different tools to construct a house, chop some wood to build a fire place to keep the house warm, etc. They helped each other to wear the uniform and shared tools. The classroom was filled with the noise of tools running. Math Center: Size Hunt continued for two other groups that didn't have a chance to go and explore. The children went on a nature walk "size hunt" to find things of different sizes: something small than our finger, bigger than our hand, longer than our arm, etc. Which one is shortest?/ Which one is longest?
Art Centre: Junior Preschool friends use a familiar tool in a novel way, utilizing a rolling pin typically found in the kitchen in a new place: We have a few types of special rolling pins we use for painting: one set has varied textures on a roller, while the other has a fabric covering, sopping up the paint and redistributing it onto the paper. The kids are intrigued by the textures and love to swap and share rolling pins during this project. Sensory Centre: Set up this fun baby doll washing activity for Junior preschoolers to enjoy. Great role play activity for developing personal, social and emotional skills as well as being a fun water play activity for inside! We used our sensory table as the baby doll washing station. Into the tray we put a variety of waterproof baby dolls, some warm soapy water, bubbly wash in a pump bottle and some baby flannels. Reading Activity: Junior Preschool friends read a book called “Color Dance”. We have learned many colors are the products of mixes of red, yellow, and blue. Emphasizing the color concepts, each color word is printed in the color it describes throughout the book. After we read a book, we turn on the music and do “Color Dance” like characters from the book. We use the scarf and try to mix the colors and dance with friends. Little Scientists: Junior Preschool friends love to look for insects on the playground, in the grass and dirt, and near trees. When we come back to the class, we set up the science center and pretend they are a scientist trying to catch insect to inspect. We place a bucket of plastic toy insects and bugs and including such animals as warms and snakes. Little scientists explore the toy insects freely.
Wood working: On the Science table, children saw the logs and they pretend banging them with hammers. We brought cork boards, wooden shapes, nails and hammers and practice hammering together. Children placed each of the wooden shapes on the cork first and then started knocking the nails into the cork to hold the pieces in place. Children became interested and made a picture of a car using the longer wooden pieces. Animal Farm: On the sensory table, we create little farm. We put some green beans and paper strips so that the farm can be cozy and comfy for animal. We places different kinds of plastic animals children can explore and observe them freely. Show and Tell: How does your toy work? Why do you like your toy? Pretend Play Center: We turned our center into a construction site. The children were busy playing in the center trying different tools. what can you do with tools? Math Center

Who is taller/shorter? Who is tallest/shortest? Who has a biggest/smallest foot? Only two groups of our children were able to go out and explore. The other two groups will have their chance next week! |
Meet the EARLY YEARS teachersMS.CarolCarol Lesser has over 20 years of experience in early childhood and ESL education. She has taught in Taiwan and Canada and has also worked at international schools in Korea, Indonesia, Singapore and Mongolia. Carol earned a Diploma and a Bachelor of Education in Early Childhood Education from universities in Taiwan. Additionally, she earned a Montessori Graduate Diploma in Vancouver, Canada. Furthermore, she earned a Master of Education in Teaching Second Languages in Toowoomba, Australia. She also has certification in Reggio Emilia, PYP, ESL, and the University of Cambridge International Primary Program. In her free time, Carol enjoys dancing, cooking, organizing social events with her husband, Michael, and traveling. She has been at Busan International Foreign School since 2015. kATHY SONKathy Son has over 20 years of experience in education. She has worked at BIFS since the winter of 1995. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Child Development in California State University of Fullerton and has done a Teacher Credential Program in Concordia University, Irvine.
