The children had a great time at the sweet potato farm. The next day, we printed out some photos and invited the children to discuss where they went and what they did at the farm, in order to development their language skills. To make the learning meaningful and support their learning, we then invited them to bake the sweet potatoes. The children enjoyed washing and cutting the potatoes, and found that sweet potatoes have different colors, such as purple and yellow. Guess what? The children all liked the purple sweet potatoes ;) Happy Halloween! The children are and were excited to dress in different costumes and were curious as to what their other friends’ costumes were as well. They explored five different activities, which were messy pasta, paper crafting, cooking decoration, face painting and pumpkin face The children even enjoyed to paint their own faces. it was so fun and we all enjoyed it. ELC, Playgroup, Junior Preschool and Senior Preschool, went on a field trip to dig sweet potatoes at the farm. Children were so excited digging sweet potatoes. Thanks to parent volunteers, we all had a great time at the farm. When we arrived, the farmers treated us with baked sweet potatoes to taste them before they went to dig the sweet potatoes. After having sweet potatoes, we went up the farm and started to dig the sweet potatoes with a hoe. It was a great chance to see how the sweet potatoes grow in the soil and how we harvest the sweet potatoes. Junior Preschool friends had a fun sorting geometric shapes. During the circle time, as a whole group, sorting by shapes. We went ground and each students placed their shapes in the correct shape. It was fun to find the shapes which are similar to geometric shapes from pictorial cards. After circle time, Junior preschool friends played I spy game and hunted the shapes which were hided from the classroom.
Learning to use scissors can be so challenging for little hands. However, Junior preschool friends always love to use a scissor during a day and have a lots of fun cutting a paper. This week, we are learning how to use a scissor safely. We think about the purpose for scissors and how we can use the scissor safely. Junior preschool friends are given different kinds of lined paper such as straight and curved line. Then they practice to cut a paper out along the line. It was little tricky to hold a scissor with our thumb, index finger, and middle finger same time. We are continue to work on this skill a daily basis, but it would really help if it was encouraged at home as well.
In our art center this week, the children had opportunities to manipulate play dough to help them further develop their fine motor skills. There were different tools for rolling, cutting, drawing and making prints. Additional materials were available to decorate their models. The children used their imagination by freely exploring the material and it helped to expand their ability to pretend and imagine. But most important thing is that they had fun! The children have been taking responsibilities to take care of the insects and caterpillars every day, such as looking for food for them. To provoke their thinking skills, we then asked:” What do insects and caterpillars like to eat?.” Niwa: “Ice cream”, Nils: “Cupcake”, Hilma: “Banana”, Mason: “Cake”, Ella: “Maybe cupcake”, Quinn: ”No, cupcake, Seo-Jin: ”Ice cream”, and Hae-Ra: “Leaf”. The children were amazed and surprised by Hae-Ra’s answer. They then agreed on Hae-Ra's answer that the insects and caterpillars like to eat leaves. ;) When an idea is suggested to the group by a peer or teacher; it trickles across to the children, encouraging them to interact or share their own experiences. The children were excited to make their own umbrella as Niwa suggested. We then prepared the open-ended materials, such as paper plates and popsicles to provoke their thinking skills and discussed with them how to make the umbrella. The children demonstrated confidence and showed their ideas through crafting. They all did a great job, we are so proud of them. The children have been talking about cake through different activities, such as making a birthday cake with sand, drawing cake with chalk, and making a birthday cake with circles. To enrich the children’s learning, we then invited them to make real cupcakes. Through baking learning experiences, the children gained experience in counting, followed instructions, and turn taking. Moreover, the children also learnt the name of ingredients and words such as flour, egg, mix, stir, and cracking the egg...etc, as well as, to develop their fine motor skills. To provoke their thinking skill, we printed out some pictures and discussed with the children about how we made them and what we needed to make cupcakes. As the children gained confidence, therefore, they were able to share their thoughts in the group. Niwa said: “I break the egg”, Nils mentioned: "Me hit the egg”, Hae-ra said: “Hae-ra mix and mix, Seojin “mix”, Mason: “Egg and flour”, Quinn: "Cut the banana”, Evgenia: “Me made cupcakes”, Hilma: “Cut banana” and Ella: "I do the cupcake and cut the banana”. We all had a great week and really enjoyed to eat our yummy cupcakes. After baking muffins, we spread cream cheese and added banana slices on top of our muffins.
Mrs Son: "How was your muffin?" Children: "Very nice and sweet" Mrs Son: "But we didn't put any sugar. What made our muffins taste sweet?" Oskar: "It was the egg." Mrs Son: "Does egg taste sweet?" Takuto: "Milk!" Mrs Son: "I'll bring all the ingredients that we used and let's find out!" Children: "Are we going to make more muffins?" Mrs Son: "Let's wait and find out!" At the beginning with this week, we read the book “Froggy Bakes a Cake” and baked a muffin together. Junior preschool friends had a so much fun to make a muffin. We mixed up muffin ingredients in bowl with a whisk and spoon batter into prepared muffin cups. We put it the oven and wait until done. Junior Preschool friends went back to classroom again talked about who do you want make a muffin for. According to the book “Froggy Bakes a Cake” The froggy made a cake for his mom’s birthday. All of junior preschool friends wanted to make a muffin for Mom and Dad. How sweet they were! After 25mints, Junior preschool friend went back to the kitchen and enjoyed their muffins together ! |
