Bugs are everywhere!
This week, the children explored and investigated about where insects live. They shared:
“The insect live in the water.”
“Sometimes, I can see them in the garden.”
“Maybe in the classroom.”
“I think Ms. Leda’s classroom maybe have insects too.”
“They live in the tree.”
“They live in the sand pit. I see many roly-poly in the sand pit.”
“I think they are everywhere.”
“I think the insects live in the mountain.”
“Maybe in the big gym.”
We then invited the children to go on a natural walk to find out and investigate based on their theories. While we walking, the children also displayed curiosity in about what kinds of insects we can find at school. The children found many kinds of insects and took a lot of pictures what they found, but we don’t know the name of most of insects. Jayden shared: “it is okay, if we don’t know, because we can find it on the computer.” Abel: “Or I can ask my dad, because he know everything.” Anna: “How about we can ask Ms. Graff”. Arthur: “Ya, Ms. Graff can help us to find books about insects”, Ethan: “I think bugs are everywhere.” And Theo: “But we can’t find bug in the Ms. Leda’s office.” Griffin: “Because the office is not outside.” The children displayed confidence in expressing their own thoughts and ideas as valuable contributions.

“Education is a nature process carried out by the child
and is not acquired by listening to words but by experience and environment."
The children enjoyed the field trip to the insect museum very much.
The children continued to discuss about why we should clean up the beach. They demonstrated awareness that they a have responsible role to play in caring for the natural world. Here are some ideas and voices from the children about why we should clean up the beach;
“If we threw the trash in the water, the fish might die, we might die too.”
“If we get old, we just die ourselves, because our body is already old. The body is tired, the heart stops. Then we have to go to the hospital.”
“If we threw trash in the water, when we swim and we drink the water, then we might die.”
“If shark eat the trash it might die.”
“If the sharks and whales see the trash, they might eat it. They might die.”
“Can trash swim in the water?”
“We throw the trash then we’re going to make the planet hurt.”
“Can trash disappear?”
“We love the planet, because we don’t the planet die. We are on the planet, then we got sick too.”
“Fish might eat the trash.”
“We sharing the planet, so we want to clean beach so we can play.”
Based on their voices, we noticed that the children have been really keen to go clean up the beach since last week. Therefore, we are organizing a beach clean-up field trip on the 25th of May. To continue to challenge them, we will discuss about how else we can help the planet.
I noticed the children have been jumping around the sand pit very often. Therefore, I invited them to make an obstacle course with sand. The children and I worked together to dig three different sizes of holes and mountains. After digging, the children couldn’t wait to try the sand obstacle course; they ran and jumped over the holes and mountains. They had so much fun!
The children have been showing awareness of signs and symbols within the environment, as well as, showing interest in recognizing the alphabet, phonics and seeking opportunities to be engaged in literacy experience. To support their interest, we then invited the children to go letter hunting which the children took some photos on the alphabets they wanted to find such as w, a, t, l, and c. We also prepared beginning sounds stamps for the children to explore.
